Visit to Hemphill Artworks’ Exhibition
Prints and Works on Paper
Saturday, April 15, 11:00 am
In-Person and Members-Only
Please join us for a visit to Hemphill Artworks to tour the current exhibition Prints and Works on Paper with Mary Early, Gallery Director. This in-person and members-only event will take place on Saturday, April 15, 11:00 am.
The exhibition includes work by artists Ron Adams, Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Robert Colescott, Allan Rohan Crite, Aaron Douglas, Sam Gilliam, Palmer Hayden, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, Lois Mailou Jones, Alison Saar, Charles Sebree, Renée Stout, James Lesesne Wells, Charles White, and Hale Woodruff. The artists presented in the show worked from the mid-1930s through as recently as 2014. While the work spans almost a century, it was made within the shared social and political context of the Black experience in America. These artists did not perceive a line where activism ended and art began. Believing that pictures could make a difference, they were invested in advocating for justice, empowerment, and community through education; the intentionality of creating editioned prints in a workshop setting reflects this dedication. Printmaking facilitated a wider distribution of their messages, allowing artists to be deliberate about connection and reaching a larger audience. Imagery portraying a rich social life offered viewers positive self-representation, verity, and aspiration for the future. The private collection of 38 works passionately assembled over a 30-year period, is honest in content and impressive in technique, both captivating the audience and effectively conveying the artworks’ significance. By boldly broadcasting their identities while the art world was systematically prejudiced, the artists in Prints & Works on Paper documented a difficult past and visualized a brighter future.
The exhibition is on view through May 6, 2023. More information is available here.

The Barlow Gilotty Collection
American University Art Museum at the
Katzen Arts Center
Saturday, April 22, 11:00 am
In-Person and Members-Only
Please join us for an April 22, 11:00 am visit to the exhibition of The Barlow Gilotty Collection at the Katzen Arts Center. The exhibition tour will be led by collectors and WPC members Philip Barlow and Lisa Gilotty.
The Barlow Gilotty Collection is the culmination of over 30 years of Washington, DC, art collecting by Philip Barlow and Lisa Gilotty, both government employees. The Washington Post has referred to the couple as belonging to “a new generation of Washington collectors” in that they don’t fall into the old-money or uber-wealthy stereotype most people think of when hearing the term “art collector.”
Barlow and Gilotty celebrate the connection between collector and artist and community. This is a deeply considered collection that includes data points which highlight its organization and thoughtful structure. Their dedicated support of artists located in the DC area is reflected in their deliberate inclusion of younger and diverse artists, which has resulted in an important overview during this time period in our cultural history. The breadth of their enthusiasm and love of art in its many forms celebrates our artistic community.
More information about the exhibition can be found here.
This program is in-person and members-only. Registration is limited to 30. Please use the blue button below to RSVP. You may register up to two people.

Ringgold / Saar: Meeting on the Matrix
Tuesday, April 4, noon
Online and Open to All
Please join the Washington Print Club for a virtual tour of RINGGOLD | SAAR: Meeting on the Matrix, the latest exhibition at the David C Driskell Center of the University of Maryland, College park MD.
RINGGOLD | SAAR: Meeting on the Matrix features the print work of Faith Ringgold and Betye Saar, providing a window into the material and conceptual explorations at play in their distinct practices. Both artists have uniquely utilized the matrix—the printmaking surface which transfers ink onto paper or fabric—as a site of possibilities for experimentation, storytelling, and activism. The exhibition is the first time the works of the two artists are featured together in an exhibition devoted to print media. This exhibition was collaboratively curated by graduate students in the University of Maryland Department of Art History and Archaeology.
The online tour and discussion will be led by Cléa Massiani, a curator and art professional formally based in San Francisco, CA.
