Registration is now open to Washington Print Club members at the “contributor” level and above for an in-person tour of Positive Fragmentation: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family led by curator Virginia Treanor. Registration is limited to 15 persons and you may register up to two people. Please register by Friday, March 11.

Organized by the National Museum of Women in the Arts and hosted by the American University Museum, this exhibition features over 100 prints by 21 contemporary artists including Lorna Simpson, Betye Saar, Wangechi Mutu, Polly Apfelbaum, Jennifer Bartlett, Christiane Baumgartner, Cecily Brown, Judy Chicago, Nicole Eisenman, Julie Mehretu, Judy Pfaff, Swoon, Barbara Takenaga, Mickalene Thomas, and Kara Walker.

At this time, American University requires all visitors to show proof of vaccination (a photo of your CDC card is acceptable) and to wear an N-95, N-94, or KN-94 mask. Unvaccinated visitors may instead show results of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of the event. These requirements may change and are outside the control of the Washington Print Club.

Free on-site parking is available in the Katzen Arts Center garage.

Reminder:

A Conversation with Danielle O’Steen, curator of the Kreeger Museum Exhibition
Lou Stovall: On Inventions and Color
Online, Thursday, March 10, 11AM Eastern

In 1968 in Washington, DC, Lou Stovall established Workshop, Inc., a screenprinting studio that aimed to connect with political movements, reach new audiences, and create opportunities for artists to expand their work into prints. Over the next 50 years, Stovall continued to make his own prints and collaborated with many artists, including Gene Davis, David Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Gwendolyn Knight, and Jacob Lawrence. In conjunction with the exhibition Lou Stovall: On Inventions and Color at The Kreeger Museum, this talk will explore Stovall’s history as a printmaker, his early years in Washington, and his innovative approach to screenprinting.

This program will be online and open to all. More information about the exhibition can be found here. You can read the catalog essay and interview online here.

Save the Date

Wednesday, April 6, 10:45 am. Beyond a Supporting Role – Paper in Jasper Johns’ Prints. Shelley R. Langdale, Curator and Head of Modern Prints and Drawings, and Amy Hughes, Paper Conservator, will talk with us about works selected from the National Gallery of Art’s archive of Jasper Johns’ print proofs, which was acquired from the artist between 2007 and 2011. These objects allow us the opportunity to better understand the choices made by the artist and his master printers during the creation of an edition. We will focus not only on the printed images, but also on the variety of unusual paper supports selected by the artist – a topic that Amy Hughes has studied in depth.  The session will be held in the NGA’s Modern Prints and Drawings Study Room. Currently, participants will be required to complete a form attesting to vaccination and to wear a mask. Registration will be limited to 20.

This upcoming program will in in-person and members-only. If you are not yet a member, visit the Washington Print Club website to join at the “contributor” or higher level.
