Matthias Mansen, with NGA Curator Shelley Langdale

April 22 @ 10:30 am

The German artist Matthias Mansen, whose work is currently on view in the exhibition, Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and its Legacy, at the National Gallery of Art, will discuss 3 prints from his 1987 Studio, Kopf und Füße (Studio, Head and Feet) series that are included in the show, and how he views his work in relation to German Expressionist and Neo-Expressionist artists.  We will then move into the Modern and Contemporary Print Study Room in the West Building to look at further examples of Mansen’s work in the National Gallery’s collection as well as some of his most recent prints which he will bring with him from Germany.
Registration is limited to 15 people. WPC members may register themself and a guest. His monumental color woodcuts, created from multiple blocks and often printed in overlays and ever-new states and combinations, have significantly advanced the art of woodcutting through his continual exploration of new opportunities for expression using this technique. He often works serially, experimenting with different iterations of a particular subject, and many of his impressions are unique. His process has evolved over time and Mansen will offer an overview of how he continues to challenge himself in his artistic practice.

The major retrospective of Mansen’s work, Matthias Mansen. Triest oder die Götter (Trieste or the Gods), just opened in Germany at the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation Schloss Gottorf, Schleswig. More information about the artist is available on his website.

Registration is limited to 15 people. WPC members may register themself and a guest.
