Please join us on Sunday, February 22, 1:00 pm for a tour of Humanist Touch: Works from the Weber Collection with exhibition curator Laura Roulet.

The works from the Weber collection reflect Joan and Bruce Weber’s long engagement with contemporary DMV artists and galleries. When they describe their collection, a strong sense of community emerges, one enriched by personal ties to the artists and by the many conversations, visits, and encounters that shaped their choices. Humanist Touch invites viewers into their world of intuitive, heartfelt collecting. Guided by a principle they call “Humanist” — the belief that art should reveal the hand of the maker and “demand something from us” — the Webers gravitate toward expressive mark-making, layered surfaces, and works that offer an authentic encounter with human creativity.

The exhibition provides a glimpse into how a meaningful collection grows over time. The Webers’ approach shows how collecting can begin not with expertise or wealth, but with genuine interest and the courage to follow what moves you.

Featuring painting, sculpture, photography, video, computer art, and performance documentation, the exhibition spans styles from Cubist abstraction to hyperrealism.

Friday, January 23, 11:00 am

Please join us on Friday, January 23, 11:00 am for a tour of the extensive art collection of the law firm Fried Frank. The tour will be led by curator Macyn Bolt.

Fried Frank began building its art collection in 1979 by acquiring contemporary paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculpture that represent a cross section of established artists and younger emerging talent. The goal was to recognize major movements that developed since the 1950s, when the United States began to occupy a more preeminent role in the international art world. Following the critical triumph of abstract expressionism, subsequent generations of artists began questioning the prevailing assumptions that it embodied. Pop, minimalist, conceptual, and post-modern art followed, with their proponents advancing new approaches, mediums and thought. The firm’s collection starts with the first major challenge represented in the work of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and builds from there with artists such as Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Julian Schnabel. Other new names have also been added over the years, reflecting the intrinsic nature of the ever-changing art world.

Fried Frank is located in Washington, DC. Attendance is limited to 20 WPC members and their guests. Please RSVP by January 16.

National Gallery of Art
Tuesday, January 27, 11:00 am

Please join us on Tuesday, January 21, 11:00am for a tour of the NGA exhibition American Landscapes in Watercolor from the Corcoran Collection with Amy Johnson, Associate Curator of Collections, Prints and Drawings.

Drawn mostly from the Corcoran Collection, a selection of 30 landscapes and seascapes dating from 1800 to 1991 reflect the colorful journey of watercolors across America. The landscapes are arranged in three themes: sights associated with Washington, DC; the rivers, waterfalls, and seascapes of New England; and western views of Yosemite, Yellowstone, and the California coast.

The earliest watercolor painters arrived here with European settlers in the late 16th century. Over the next 200 years, the medium was used primarily by commercial and amateur artists. Printmakers and explorers found watercolors to be an inexpensive and portable material apt for mapping and documenting the landscape. In the 19th century, painters turned to watercolors to depict the country in larger and more carefully finished works.

After the American Watercolor Society was founded in 1867, watercolors came to be seen as an independent fine art. Winslow Homer, William Trost Richards, and other artists exploited the medium’s potential to produce finished works worthy of collecting and putting on public display. More information about the exhibition can be found here.

Attendance is limited to 20 WPC members and their guests. Please RSVP by January 20.

Dr. Joyce is the co-curator of Deconstructing Nature and the BMA’s Assistant Curator of Academic Engagement.

Turning to the moment when industrial capitalism first made indelible marks on the non-human world, this exhibition of nineteenth-century French works on paper investigates how artists both documented and contributed to the transformation of the environment into a resource to be hoarded or shared. Foregrounding the ecological issues at stake in these works opens up new ways of understanding extractive relationships among people, including imperialism and capitalism. The presentation is drawn from the George A.
Curated by WPC member Vesela Sretenović, Anonymous Was a Woman: Jae Ko | linn meyers | Joyce J. Scott | Renée Stout dovetails with the recent group exhibition Anonymous Was a Woman: The First 25 Years organized by and presented at the New York University’s Grey Art Museum and co-curated by Nancy Princenthal and Vesela Sretenović.

The Grey exhibition celebrated the first quarter-century of the Anonymous Was a Woman (AWAW) grant program. Established in 1996 by philanthropist and artist Susan Unterberg, the program is dedicated to supporting mid-career women artists living and working in the United States. Its name refers to a phrase in Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own, which underscores the challenges that creative women have historically faced in a male-dominated society.

The Kreeger Museum’s exhibition focuses exclusively on four AWAW recipients who reside and work in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The Kreeger Museum’s presentation spotlights the most recent work of its participating artists, picking up where the Grey show left off.

The Kreeger Museum’s exhibition not only celebrates artists based in the DMV area —aligning with the Museum’s mission—but also extends the reach of the AWAW program beyond New York City, further disseminating its mission to support and bring greater visibility to the creative output of women artists.

More information about the Kreeger exhibition can be found here.
Attendance is limited to 20 WPC members and their guests. Please RSVP by December 5.

Onsite parking is limited. Carpooling and ride share is encouraged. Please note that WPC program participants will be charged museum admission ($15 or $10 for seniors). There will be no charge for WPC members who are also members of the Kreeger Museum. Please bring proof of your Kreeger Membership.

Saturday, October 11, 11:00 am

Please join us for a visit to the Northeast Washington, DC studio of artist Julia Bloom on Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 am.

Julia shares, “My typewriter drawings contain my most private thoughts and obsessions. I start a drawing by typing uncensored stream-of-consciousness diary entries in the style of Surrealist automatic writing on Japanese, Nepalese, and other papers, using old typewriters. I type over the same page several times, documenting my reflections, dreams, to-do lists, current events, and overheard conversations, as well as my worries, anxieties, and epiphanies, over and in between my original typed lines of text. These layers of typing form patterns, creating tension between legibility and illegibility. I draw bold shapes in charcoal, graphite, and other materials on this layered text, further obscuring my words. These areas of blocked out text are my nod to the redactions commonly used in official documents to protect privacy, but they are also a quiet stillness within the cacophony of my thoughts.”

Registration is open to15 WPC members and their guests. Members may register for themselves and one guest. Please RSVP by October 1.

Please join us for a visit to the Washington, DC studio of artist Carol Barsha on Saturday, September 20 at 11:00 am.

Carol shares with us that painting for her has consistently been a means to discover and reveal the beauty of the natural world. Her compositions are often quite personal, symbolic, and surreal with hidden meanings.

Carol has always been fascinated by the smallest details of flowers, birds, the gesture of an upturned leaf, movement of water, and has sought to master the spirals and sequences, colors and patterns inherent in them. Her process involves a layering of drawing and painting materials, as well as collaged remnants of her own work.

The artist works on paper because she loves its “touch” and because she relies on the white as an important element in the final painting. Carol seeks to create a never-been-seen-before world that she can discover and inhabit, creating a view of nature that inspires and transports.

Registration is open to15 WPC members and their guests. Members may register for themselves and one guest. Please RSVP by September 13.

Please join us for a visit to the Silver Spring, MD studios of artists Charles and Jenny Ritchie, Saturday, September 27, 11:00 am.

Over the past 40 years Jenny and Charlie’s art studio home has inspired Charlie’s drawings, intaglio prints, and more than 171 watercolor journals. Print proofs, mezzotint plates, in-progress drawings, and sketchbooks under construction attest to his process. Jenny’s creative invention is found throughout the house and has most recently has blossomed in Japanese Shibori – resist dyeing fabric with indigo – involving the intricate sewing and blocking of cloth in patterns. Jenny will present samples of the variations she has learned.

Please Join Us for a Visit to the Private Collection of Joe Wetzel and Catherine Day
Saturday, September 6, 1:00 pm

Catherine and Joe have been collecting art together most of their adult lives. Rooted in their shared love of photography and printmaking, the collection of over 200 pieces leans heavily into works on paper. While the focus is American modern and contemporary art, the collection crosses borders and centuries. European prints, ancient artifacts (including a 1st-century Greek terracotta and a fragment of a Ptolemaic-period Egyptian sarcophagus), contemporary glass, and small sculpture all find a home here.

The Wetzel/Day home is located in Northern Virginia. Further logistical details will be sent to registrants.

Catherine and Joe have generously offered to open their home to 30 WPC members and their guests. Members may register for themselves and one guest. Please use the button below to RSVP by August 30.
